Australia, New Zealand & Oceania: Vanuatu

Overview
Vanuatu is both the most primitive and most interesting place I have had the pleasure of visiting in the South Pacific. From visiting villages where cannibalism existed as late as 1967 to boat trips to Tranquility Bay where one can visit caves to view ancient cave art, to cliff diving, Vanuatu supplies the traveler with experiences that few other places can provide.

Getting There
From the US I flew Air New Zealand to Fiji. I then took Air Vanuatu from Nadi (Fiji) and flew to Port Vila (Vanuatu). I took a taxi to the Royal Palms resort and casino (yes they have gambling-don't expect Las Vegas). Transportation around the island is done by taxi or rental car. Vans are used for transporting more than a few people.

Accommodations
The flight on Air Vanuatu was very comfortable. The plane was virtually empty. The hotel was first class. The staff were extremely helpful and the other guests very friendly. Once the Vanuatans found out I was an American, I was treated better than the Australians or New Zealanders. The Vanuatans love America.

Food and Service
The island is divided into two sectors-French and English. The very best food was on the French side. I had fresh fish several times and I was not disappointed at all. My morning started out at a French bakery where I had coffee and a roll or pastry. If possible I would avoid the hotel food and take a taxi to a French restaurant.

Activities
There surprisingly many activities. The hotel housed the Tour Vanuatu travel office. There are land trips around the island (my least favorite), day cruises, flights to different islands to see active volcanos, cliff diving, etc. If there only a day-don't go. It's too far away from the US.

Fitness
There is a swimming pool and a lagoon where one can sail. Hobi cats are provided.

Childcare
I am not aware of baby sitting.
